Living in a home without a garage? Thinking of building one? Before you spend thousands of dollars on this addition to your home, consider for a moment an alternative. Why not build a carport? Carports have many advantages over a garage, not the least of which is their affordability.

For a couple hundred dollars, you can buy the materials for a carport and build it yourself in a weekend. You can even purchase a carport that’s pre-fabricated. A garage, on the other hand, will require extensive remodeling and a tremendous amount of work. It’s true that a garage has the added benefit of a storage facility for your gardening tools and miscellaneous items, but for far less than half of the cost of building a garage, you can install a garden shed along with your carport.

Another benefit of a carport is its versatility. Carports are usually clean spaces, because there is no room under them for anything other than a car. This means you have a ready shelter for Yard Sales, BBQ dinners, summer parties, lemonade stands, you name it. All you have to do is park the car on the street. On the other hand, if you wanted to make your garage available for a yard sale, it’s likely you’d have to do some heavy-duty cleaning before you let anyone step a foot inside. In fact, you’d probably be trying to sell what was in your garage taking up room in the first place!

Finally, your carport is portable and valuable. If you decide to move, you can take it with you. Or, if you decide to leave it, you can up the value of your house. While a carport won’t increase your home’s value as much as a garage would, it’s still a shelter that will protect the new owner’s vehicle from the elements, and that’s definitely worth something.

In short, a carport can offer you many of the same benefits as a garage–plus a few of its own–for a fraction of the price and none of the hassle.
